About Me
Fused glass artist, mum and lifelong Highlander. Here's a little about me and how Dizzy Glass came to be.
The Maker
My name is Mel and I'm 49 years old. I was born in Inverness, the middle child to the most wonderful parents.
I live just outside Beauly with my two children, my two cats and my Cockapoo — a busy, happy, slightly hairy household that I wouldn't change for the world.
The Turning Point
I first discovered fused glass 15 years ago, on a trip to Banff in Canada. I had walked into a shop full of fused glass pieces — everything from jewellery to vases — and it became the most wonderful turning point for me.
From the very first moment I held a piece of glass, cut it, arranged the colours and shapes, and watched it transform in the kiln — I was completely hooked.
Back then, I was looking for something that would help me slow down — a quiet, creative space away from the rush and noise of everyday life. Fused glass gave me exactly that: a calm, colourful world where time seems to soften and every piece catches the light a little differently.
Trial & Error
I bought my first kiln from eBay — which actually turned out to be a ceramic kiln! Yes, it has been a steep learning curve.
It took a lot of patience, trial and error to produce my first proper pieces of work. But I got there — and along the way I produced some gorgeous jewellery, which I went on to sell through local galleries. Every wobble and wonky early attempt taught me something, and that spirit of playful experimenting is still at the heart of everything I make today.
